How To Get To Hoang Su Phi ?

How to get to Hoang Su Phi ?

Hoang Su Phi is situated at about 400 km from Hanoi and about 100 km to the west of Ha Giang city center. You can get to Ha Giang by bus, by private car or by motorbike, or combine taking a bus and a motorbike.

From Hanoi to Ha Giang

Because it's gonna be a 6 hour ride to Ha Giang, we recommend getting on a comfortable sleeper bus from My Dinh bus station, for about 250.000 - 350.000 VND/person. Once you get on the bus, you have 2 options: either get down at Tan Quang junction and take a bus to Hoang Su Phi, or go straight to Ha Giang and then rent a motorbike to drive to Hoang Su Phi. From Ha Giang to Hoang Su Phi

Once you get to Ha Giang, hop on a collective bus or rent a bike to Hoang Su Phi. You can take the CT05 route to Phu Tho commune, then QL2 to Tuyen Quang and take a turn to DT177 toward Hoang Su Phi. When to visit Hoang Su Phi?

The spring, when flowers that are only found in the North-West bloom, is also when the locals host traditional festivals and folk games. This is also the best time to admire fields of peach and pear flowers and to visit Shan Tuyet tea hills, a speciality of Hoang Su Phi.

The summer, Hoang Su Phi showcases its beauty with terraced rice fields in watering season.

The fall, Hoang Su Phi attracts tourists for it's stunning golden rice terraces that is a constant inspiration for art and poetry. The end of fall or the beginning of winter are also great times to visist Hoang Su Phi for its mesmerizing fields of purple buckwheat flowers.

A 3-day Hoang Su Phi road trip

Day 1: Hoang Su Phi - Nam Hong Village - Ho Thau

Start off your trip by visiting Nam Hong Village in Thong Nguyen commune, about 40 km from Hoang Su Phi, where the Red Dzao people live. This is where you can admire terraced rice fields along the sides of the hills. After lunch you can make your way to Phin Ho to visit the ancient Shan Tuyet tea garden and learn more about the culture around a cup of this specialty. Continue to Ho Thau village where you will spend the night and have a nice herbal bath.

Day 2: Chieu Lau Thi - Coc Pai Town - Bac Ha

After breakfast, get ready for a hike to Chieu Lau Thi peak, at an elevation of 2402 m above sea level. This is one of the most impressive mountains in Vietnam and an exciting destination to "catch clouds". Next, head to Coc Pai Town where you will have lunch. In the afternoon, you can either visit Ban Phung village and its terraced rice fields, the highest ones in Vietnam, or visir Suoi Thau grassland, a new destination connecting Xin Man commune and Bac Ha. After your visit, continue towards Bac Ha where you will spend the night.

Day 3: Bac Ha Market - Hoang A Tuong Palace - Hanoi

We advice you to wake up early to visit Bac Ha market, the largest market held by ethnic groups of the Northwest region, where you can find unique local foods, wines made from cereal and fruits like plum, prune, peach, etc. and immerse in local culture of the H'Mong, the Dzao and the Tay. Next, visit Hoang A Tuong's Palace, recognized as a national architectural and artistic relic. Have lunch at a local restaurant before heading back to Hanoi.

Tips

  • Book your rooms in advance, especially during high season
  • Bring comfortable and warm clothes in case it gets cold, and spare shoes to go trekking
  • If you do decide to go by motorbike, bring your license and spare gas just in case
